🗣️ 2–3 years

🎨 3–5 years

The heart of readiness — nursery, LKG and UKG age. Pre-reading, early maths, self-care and getting along with others, all through play, not worksheets.

📚 5–8 years

Grades 1 and 2: real reading and maths begin. Support them at home with reading together and real-life maths, and protect curiosity and play.

When to check with someone

Every child is different. Readiness is a wide range, and a summer-born or younger child is often simply younger, not behind. Talk to your paediatrician or teacher if your child cannot follow simple instructions, does not play with others, is very hard to understand, or if you have any worry about development. Questions parents ask

What does school readiness actually mean?
Mostly non-academic skills: speaking and listening, following instructions, playing and sharing with others, managing small frustrations, and basic independence like eating, dressing and using the toilet. Letters and numbers matter far less than these at this age.
Should I drill my child before nursery or Class 1?
No. NEP 2020 deliberately moved away from early worksheet drilling. Playful pre-reading and real-life maths, plenty of talk, and social and self-care skills prepare a child far better than sit-down academics.
Is homeschooling legal in India, and what about certificates?
There is no law penalising homeschooling parents, and many Indian families do it openly. For recognised Class 10 and 12 certificates, children sit exams privately through NIOS. See our homeschooling page for the full picture.
