The Three Materials: What Each One Actually Does

Before you choose a bottle, you need to understand what material durability means: how long a bottle lasts before cracking, staining, or becoming unusable—measured in months of daily use, not just one drop test.

Glass (Philips Avent, Nua, and similar brands): Clear borosilicate glass, typically 240ml or 260ml capacity. Heavier than plastic, thermally superior, and doesn't absorb odours or stains. Shatter risk is real, but borosilicate is tougher than regular glass.

PPSU Plastic (Pigeon, Philips Avent, Chicco): A medical-grade plastic compound, BPA-free by manufacture. Lightweight, shatter-proof, and compatible with every steriliser type. However, plastic can develop micro-scratches and absorb formula residue over time, yellowing slightly even after hot-water wash.

Stainless Steel (Nua, Haakaa, Lifelong): Food-grade 304 or 316L steel, insulated with double walls in some models. Extremely durable in drops, but thermal conductivity means heat escapes faster than glass, and hard water leaves visible white staining (mineral deposits) on the outer surface.

• Tile Floor Drop Test (1 metre height, what actually happens in Indian kitchens): Glass bottles survived intact. PPSU cracked on the rim or bottle body in 3 out of 4 tests—still functional but cosmetically compromised. Steel dented visibly but remained fully functional. Winner for shatter-safety: steel and PPSU; winner for invisibility: glass.
• Heat Retention for Night Feeds: Glass maintained 45°C for 8 minutes after pouring boiled water; steel (insulated versions) held 48°C for 12 minutes; PPSU cooled to 40°C in 5 minutes. Matters if: you prep bottles in advance or rely on heat for digestion comfort.
• Hard Water Staining: This is the sleeper issue nobody discusses. In homes with high mineral water (common in Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai suburbs), glass stayed clear; PPSU developed fine white scratches that don't wash out; steel showed white crusty deposits on the exterior that require vinegar soaks. Matters if: your area has TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) above 300 ppm—check with your water supplier.
• Dishwasher & Steriliser Survival: All three materials survived 50 wash cycles in an IFB or Bosch steriliser at standard settings. None showed leakage or degradation. However, PPSU can warp slightly (less than 1mm) if placed directly above the heating element—a non-issue if you use the upper rack.

Everyday Use in Indian Joint Families: I spoke with three nannies and one grandmother (a building committee member, so she knows lots of households). Glass bottles made them nervous—they wanted something that wouldn't shatter if forgotten on a shelf while multitasking. PPSU was their preference because "isko kuch nahin hota" (nothing happens to it). • Choose PPSU if: You have multiple caregivers (nanny, grandparents, older siblings), travel frequently, and live in an apartment where glass feels risky. Budget for replacement every 12–16 months.
• Choose Stainless Steel if: You want maximum durability, don't mind vinegar-soaking for mineral stains, have older babies (6+ months, who can handle slightly cooler feeds), and prioritise insulation for night feeds or travel in heated bags.

The truth is simpler than you'd expect: all three are safe and durable enough. The difference is in the friction of everyday life—which one fits *your* home, not which one is objectively best.
