Car and train safety

Before you leave

  • Pack one full change of clothes for the toddler and a T-shirt for you in the hand bag, not the suitcase.
  • Book travel around the nap: a train or flight that starts just before nap time is the quietest.
  • Carry a copy of the child's vaccination record and your paediatrician's number.
  • New toys stay new only if they're hidden until the moment they're needed.

Questions parents ask

Does a toddler need a car seat in India?

Yes, for every car journey, however short. Indian law requires a child restraint for children, and a lap or seat belt isn't safe for a small child. A convertible seat covers roughly one to four years.

Stroller or carrier for a trip?

Both have their place: a carrier for stations, crowds and stairs, a lightweight stroller for long walks and naps. If you must choose one for a toddler, most parents pick the carrier.

How do I keep a toddler busy on a long train journey?

Small, new-to-them activities handed out one at a time: a busy book, reusable stickers, a water colouring pad, snacks in a catcher, and a window seat. Save the screen for the last hour.
