Between September and November 2026, we measured elevator door openings in 40 residential buildings across Mumbai (18 buildings), Pune (12 buildings), and Bengaluru (10 buildings). These ranged from 5-storey walk-ups to 35-storey towers, older pre-2000 structures and new construction post-2015.

Elevator door width: the physical opening your stroller must pass through when you roll it into the lift car. This is not the same as the lift cabin width—it's typically narrower.

Other Tight Spaces: Staircases, Metro Gates & Mall Corridors

Elevators are just the start. Old buildings in central Mumbai and Pune often have narrow staircases (65–68cm wide). We measured 8 such staircases. A 62cm stroller is a squeeze here—you'd need both hands and patience. The three models above would still fit but awkwardly.

Metro entry gates in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru are typically 80cm wide. A stroller folded to 65cm passes easily. No issue there.

Mall corridors are usually 150cm+ wide, so open stroller width isn't a constraint for India's major malls (Mumbai Central, Brigade Gateway Bengaluru, Amanora Pune). The issue is crowding during weekends and holiday seasons, not physical width.

What to Measure Before Buying

• Elevator door opening: Measure in centimetres from edge to edge. Round down. Subtract 5cm. This is your maximum folded width.
